Let's Draw Richmond

Join us for a tour of sketchspots in this beautiful town. On the map are the historic Richmond Green and theatre, the ancient Old Palace Yard, the spectacle of Richmond Riverside, a farmers market and options to climb Richmond Hill to sketch the only view protected by an Act of Parliament. Sketchcrawl
Here are some suggestions for a route with varied sketching in this beautiful town. Choose one spot for a focused study or come with us for a tour with 20-minute sketchspots. The footpath next to One Kew Road leads to the first stop:

Richmond Green

Richmond Green has been an important open space since the Middle Ages when it hosted jousting competitions. Many fine old houses, the central library and the famous Richmond Theatre flank the Green.

Narrow streets border the green, with possibilities for sketching and coffee.
















Old Palace Yard 

Richmond Palace was a royal residence on the River Thames in England that stood in the 16th and 17th centuries. Only vestigial traces now survive, notably the Gate House. The site of the former palace is the area between Richmond Green and the River Thames, and some local street names provide echoes of the former Palace, including Old Palace Lane, Old Palace Yard and The Wardrobe.

A grassy terrace provides an ideal spot to capture the river, the people, the bridge and the architecture.

Richmond Farmers' Market is an alternative source of food and artistic inspiration.

2.00pm Painting from a boat from Richmond Riverside: an opportunity for a duck’s eye view of the river. As the tide is favourable we have arranged with Mark Edwards/Richmond Boathouses who built The Glorianna, as an optional extra for any who want to emulate the Newlyn School or Turner in Venice and sketch the Riverside from boats near the opposite bank. The cost for this will be £6 per person for about 2 hours from 2.00pm.

Richmond Hill: a 10-minute walk

This renowned hill offers the only view in England to be safeguarded by an Act of Parliament to protect the land on and below Richmond Hill and thus safeguard the fine foreground views to the west and south. Immortalised in paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds and JMW Turner, it was described by Sir Walter Scott as "an unrivalled landscape".

The scenic panorama may be viewed from Terrace Walk, laid out near the top of the hill in the 18th century. This promenade surmounts the Terrace Gardens and both are Grade II* listed . Terrace Walk is an ideal spot for sketching. To reach it, walk up the picturesque Hill Rise, with its little shops and handsome houses, or walk along the riverside and climb up through Terrace Gardens, past pretty Hollyhock Cafe.

If dry: Tide Tables café. Meet on the café terrace, on the south side of the Bridge.

This café is in a converted arch beneath Richmond Bridge and has a large garden with majestic plane trees. Great coffee, great food, warm and friendly atmosphere and a huge terrace to sit outside, with steps to show off our work.

Just up the steps by Richmond Bridge, by night this bar is a favourite with Richmond’s young, and a great place to relax by day. It has a fabulous terrace overlooking the river.

What's Involved in organised and leading an USK London event

As indicated previously, Nathan Brenville has left London for a new life in Spain and we are now actively looking for new people to help out with the organisation and leading of the sketchcrawls.


Here's what's involved in organising and leading a "Let's Draw" event for London Urban Sketchers.

It's absolutely OK for more than one person to agree to take on responsibility for an event if two or three people would like to work together. We'd be happy to advice

What needs doing

• find the best places for a large group to assemble at the beginning, lunchtime and the end. It needs to be somewhere where we don't obstruct other people
• find the places to go if it rains!
• a blog post beforehand - to provide guidance on where and when. You can ask for help with images for the post.
• take photos of people and sketches on the day - at lunchtime and at the end - and upload them to the Urban Sketchers Flickr Group Pool afterwards
• a blog post afterwards - to record the event and show what happened

You need to be....

• a regular participant in the group i.e. somebody who sketches London regularly and has
• either posted work to the Facebook Group and
• or has regularly attended Let's Draw events in 2015
• somebody who knows and observes the Urban Sketchers Manifesto
• somebody who knows the area well - or is prepared to research it in advance - we all need to know the good places to sketch!
• OK about talking to people and answering lots of questions
• Punctual - and there to provide advice to people at the beginning 
• Willing to 
• research the location e.g. where are the public toilets / places to get sandwiches and hot drinks before, during and afterwards!
• sketch less and help out more on the day

Let's Draw The National Gallery and Trafalgar Square at Christmas - 12th December 2015

This December's "Let's Draw London" sketchcrawl on Saturday 12th December 2015, is based around Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. PLEASE NOTE THE LATE START.

The aim of starting later is to have time to sketch the tree in lights as dusk begins

The Christmas Tree on Friday 4th December 2015 at 4.40pm

In early December the Christmas Tree from Norway is erected in Trafalgar Square. You can see a photo of it that I took on Friday afternoon last week above.

For those wanting to sketch the Christmas Tree and the lights at the entrance to the Strand I recommend experimenting with some dark paper with you and media which works on top of dark paper!  Otherwise you just end up filling in a lot of darks!

In case it's wet or for those of us who don't do to well in cold/damp weather (I shall be indoors!), the National Gallery offers lots of opportunities for keeping warm and dry and drawing people and paintings in art galleries.  The trick with drawing people fast is to focus on the shape, size and posture and not the faces.  There's also any amount of architecture and perspective in the very large interiors to keep the 'drawing buildings' fans happy!

The National gallery has sketching stools - but they're sometimes difficult to locate

PLEASE NOTE: The National Gallery does not allow wet media for sketching. You need to use pencils or coloured pencils. Pens that don't use wet ink seem to be OK i.e. no dip pens and no fountain pens.

Guidelines

• Sketching is not allowed in exhibitions
• Use a hand-held pad of paper, pencil, graphite stick or felt-tipped pens
• Avoid materials such as pastels, wax crayons, charcoal and fountain pens

No one will go hungry at this month's gathering as we are meeting at one of London's most tasty markets - Borough Market - a dream for the foodies amongst us.There is multitude of produce/stalls/architecture/tasty morsels to sketch so your inspiration should rejoice.

Let's Draw Chelsea and Battersea - 10th October 2015

Albert Bridge from Cheney Walk by Swasky

It is going to be difficult to know what to choose this month!
We will be on two sides of the river and two very different areas, Chelsea and Battersea roughly between the two bridges Albert Bridge and Battersea Bridge.

Start Meeting 11:30 Albert Bridge by the river (western end) on the Chelsea side. See map link here for exact location.
To get there use the TFLwebsite, here, as there are various buses that get you there but the fastest route will depend on your point of origin.
In the morning, we suggest:

• Exploring the embankment - there amazing buildings and history along Cheyne Walk  and the Chelsea embankment.
• Sketching Views of bridges and the southern modern Riverside.

Lunch time 1:30 pm at the Battersea Park Buddhist pagoda - Great spot for a group photo.
For lunch - Bring a picnic, grab a tea on the park kiosk or have a bite at The Prince Albert on the Battersea end of the Albert Bridge.
In the afternoon we suggest:
Drawing from Battersea Park and around the Riverside and around the Royal College of Arts 

The end - meet on the Battersea side - at the Doodle Bar- 4pm

note: If the weather is bad we can retreat to the Doodle Bar early and draw there, or visit the Royal College of Arts at Battesea Ground floor Galleries.

URGENT UPDATE: Sketchcrawl now switched to Sunday 16th August

The Sketchcrawl Let's Draw - Trafalgar Square, The Mall & St James Park - Saturday 15th August 2015 is MOVING TO SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST

We always do a search to see if there's anything coming up in an area at the time but somehow or other the VJ Day celebrations did not pop up as something happening on that day.

It's a big celebration this year because it's the 70th and consequently the last major celebration at which many people who participated in that theatre of the second world war will be able to participate.

However the important thing for our sketchcrawl is that it will take place on the same day - and in exactly the same area (see map below).

The area of our sketchcrawl on Saturday will therefore have:

• lots of roads closed (Click on the map below to see the very large version of how the road closures work on Saturday)
• lots of barriers up to keep people from moving across roads
• lots of people around and about - and circulating across the area will be a lot more difficult
• lots of security (re. the alleged bomb plots and - as you can imagine - they'll be very interested in people walking around with backpacks on!)

So - we've decided we need to change the date. People were sounded out at short notice via the Facebook Group Event listing and we've decided to change to the Sunday.

Profuse apologies to all those who cannot now make it - but we thought a more enjoyable environment and no hassle for backpackers was more important for our sketchcrawl.

Anybody who has bought a train ticket should be able to change it or get a refund.

For those feeling intrepid and determined to brave the crowds you can find details here of what will be happening re the flypast by three historic service, the drumhead service and big screens. Please also be alert for security considerations.

If anybody knows of a listing which identifies events in specific areas by specific dates we'd like to know about it as we did check before deciding on the date!

Our next London Urban Sketchers sketchcrawl will be around and about The Mall, St. James's Park and Trafalgar Square in Central London.

It's FREE and there's no need to book a place - just turn up on the day!

Details of where to go are listed beneath the images and sketches below.

You are spoilt for choice in terms of places to sketch and there's something for everyone.

You can:

• spend your time on the view down The Mall with Buckingham Palace at one end and Admiralty Arch at the other and lots of perspective challenges

• sketch the trees, pelicans and people in St James Park - one of the Royal Parks - running alongside the Mall

• draw the fantastic architecture of Horse Guards (a large grade I listed building in the Palladian style between Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade in London) and Admiralty Arch (another Grade 1 listed building).
  

• Or just spend all day capturing the views around Trafalgar Square and the very many people using the Square - including the great view of the National Gallery, Nelson's Column, Landseer's four bronze lions around the base, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament in the distance

Where to go and what you need to know

WHERE: Trafalgar Square, The Mall & St James Park

WHEN: Saturday 15th August 2015

START: 11:00am at the Guards Memorial on Horse Guards Parade - on the Park side opposite the Parade Ground  (Wet Weather: Inn the Park - the cafe restaurant next to the Lake in St James Park if wet)

LUNCH: 1:00 the terrace between the Mall and Spring Gardens (up the steps from the Mall - next to British Council HQ and between Mall Galleries and Admiralty Arch).  (Wet Weather: Next to the Gates under Admiralty Arch). We'll share out sketches and probably do the lunchtime photo on the steps. There's also a couple of sandwich shops just round the corner.

END: 3:30pm - in the walkway between the Sainsbury Wing and main building of the National Gallery (Wet Weather: in the lobby of the Sainsbury Wing) - share our sketches + another group photo to add to the collection! We'll probably try for one with Trafalgar Square or the National Gallery in the background.

YOU WILL NEED: sketching materials of your choice and a stool to sit on (unless you like standing or squatting)

WET WEATHER OPTION: There are quite a few places where you can sketch and remain dry. These include:

• sketch St James Park from the Inn the Park
• sketch Trafalgar Square from Pret a Manger or Cafe Nero - on south west side of Trafalgar Square
• sketch the Mall from under Admiralty Arch
• sketch people and paintings inside the National Gallery

London Sketchers in Oxford

Last Saturday's outing had exceptional weather in Oxford and the buzz of the place could be felt easily with tourists, graduates and families milling about.
After a hectic week (#oxfordworkshop2015) I enjoyed sketching around my favourite Radcliffe square, this time I  focused not on the central Camera (room) with its great Dome but on the surrounding buildings.

A couple of photos also of the group, first at lunch time and then at the Museum of Oxford where the Urban Sketching exhibition continues until 27th July.

Next month's sketchcrawl details will be published shortly - back in central London - Katherine Tyrrell will lead that one.

For those of you interested in sketching on the heath itself, there's also a detailed map here of points of interest.

If you do want to draw on the heath, it's worth noting that it's pretty big to say the least (!) so you may not want to trek all the way back to meet at lunchtime at the museum - this is perfectly fine, we can always catch up at the end at 3.30 instead.

Additionally, if you don't want to do a lot of walking, it may be best to choose either Hampsead village OR Hampstead Heath rather than attempting both, but it's up to you!

Hopefully June means that it's a fairly safe bet that the weather will be fine, but in England who knows! Hampstead Heath is fairly lacking in shelter, other than trees!

As always, it's free to join, you just need to bring your own sketching materials... and perhaps an umbrella and/or suncream.

Here's the summary

• Venue: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in south west London
• Date: Saturday 16th May 2015 (The gardens are open from 10am if you want to get there early and close at 6.30pm if you want to stay late)
• Entrance Fee: Please make a particular note that this venue is NOT free and there is a charge of£15 per adult (£14 if purchased online) and Free if you are a Friend.
• Start: 11:00am at the Terrace outside the Victoria Plaza café next to the Entrance (just to the right of the ticket gate) - introduction to those new to urban sketching and tips re. Kew Gardens
• Lunch: 1:30pm at The Orangery - share our sketches, group photo - and time for lunch. The Orangery has hot and cold food from Peyton & Byrne and tables and chairs to sit and eat at.  You can also buy sandwiches from Tesco on the left as you walk out of Kew Station.
• End: 3:30pm - in front of the Palm House (Lake side) - share our sketches + another group photo to add to the collection!
• Travel: Kew Gardens Station
• Underground: District Line to Richmond - There appear to be no problems with the District Line this weekend. For other lines see the map below
• North London Line to Richmond.

According to BBC Weather, the weather is due to be light cloud in the morning (15C) then sun from 3pm (17C) - so hopefully no rain.
