This April we go to the trendy neighbourhood of Shoreditch in East London

[Led by Jia You and Jimmy Lu]

Located in the East End of London, Shoreditch is a trendy and bustling neighbourhood that has undergone significant transformation in recent years. Once an industrial area, it is now a hub for thriving industries such as arts, fashion and technology.

With attractions such as Brick Lane, the Truman Brewery Market, vintage markets and street art, Shoreditch offers a wealth of opportunities for urban sketching. The neighbourhood is renowned for its vibrant street art scene, diverse architecture and creative energy, providing an ideal environment for artists to explore and capture. Whether you're drawn to the energy of the streets or the intricate details of the built environment, Shoreditch offers something for every urban sketcher.

There is no cost, just wrap up warm and bring your sketching kit.

Meeting point

Our meeting point for the day is Boundary Garden, a small raised park on a roundabout surrounded by blocks of flats. It's a three minute walk from Shoreditch High Street Station, and a 15 minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. If the weather is rainy we'll meet inside the bandstand (see photo).

Let's draw Battersea Power Station - Saturday 18 February 2023

Sketch by Andrea Deng

For our second sketchwalk of 2023 we will be drawing the recently opened Battersea Power Station SW11 8AL, one of the newest and most vibrant neighbourhoods of London.

[Led by Andrea Deng and Jimmy Lu]

The Battersea Power Station, dominated by its four iconic chimneys and deeply rooted in popular culture, is now open to the public as a new shopping and leisure destination with pedestrian-centred public spaces, parkland and gardens.

This decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station is one of the world’s largest brick buildings and a prime example of Industrial Art Deco. The recent redevelopment of the area includes the addition of several residential buildings and public spaces designed by internationally renowned architects, with new public riverside access along the Thames.  If you'd like to know more about this exciting new development, here’s more about
the master plan.

There is no cost, just wrap up warm and bring your sketching kit.

Our meeting point for the day is the North Entrance,
which faces the River Thames.

Meeting point

Our meeting point for the day is the North Entrance, which faces the River Thames (see photo above). If the weather is fair, we will meet in the square outside the North Entrance. If it's rainy, we will meet inside the North Entrance.

Options for drawing

Indoors

Battersea Power Station
All of the ground floor and Level 1 are open to the public, so you have plenty of choices to draw inside.
  • Turbine Hall A is Art Deco in style, reflecting the 1930s when construction of the Power Station began.
  • Turbine Hall B is Brutalist in design, a nod to the 1950s when the building was completed. On the ground floor of Turbine Hall B is Battersea Bookshop, an independent neighbourhood bookshop that specialises in art, architecture and design, and showcases ‘some of the unique architectural elements of the iconic Battersea Power Station’.
  • Lift 109, 'London's epic new viewing experience', is a glass platform lift that rises more than 100 metres to the top of the northwest chimney for spectacular 360 degree views. You will need to book in advance to secure a ticket.

    Outdoors
    • Electric Boulevard - A new pedestrianised high street that links the Power Station to the new Battersea Power Station Tube station.
    • The Coaling Jetty - A 110m long Grade II listed jetty with a great view over the Thames and the Power Station. The Coaling Jetty has been redesigned as a riverside garden, opening up a new public space along the River Thames.
    • Phase 3 residential units with iconic twisted shapes designed by Frank Ghery, and the serpentine ribbon designed by Foster+Partners.
    • Battersea Park and the Peace Pagoda - Battersea Park is a 200 acre Victorian park with a boating lake, tea gardens, a children's zoo and other attractions. The London Peace Pagoda is one of 80 around the world built by Buddhist nuns and monks as a spiritual focus for reflections on world peace and non violence. There is a panoramic view of Chelsea Embankment from the pagoda.

NOTE CHANGE OF DATE - Let's draw Covent Garden - Saturday 10 December 2022

    Covent Garden
    Sketch by Karen Jones

[By Isabel Carmona and Sasala Wickramasinghe]

In December we go back and draw Covent Garden in all its Christmas splendour!

The giant Christmas tree specially selected for Covent Garden!

This is our second attempt to sketch iconic Covent Garden, since our last visit had to be cancelled due to spiking Covid numbers. As usual, Covent Garden will be full of festive cheer and bustling with Christmas shoppers. The giant baubles and mistletoe are back in the piazza -- Karen Jones (see main image above) drew these in 2016 -- and new this year is the hand painted 19th century Covent Garden Christmas Sleigh. We certainly will be spoilt for choice on things to sketch!

The day is free of charge, no need to book, just turn up with your art kit. Don't forget to wrap up warm!

    Key times and meeting points

    11 AM

Meet outside the Apple Store (1-7 The Piazza, WC2E 8HB) under the arches in the covered area, which should provide shelter in case of rain.

    1 PM

For our throwdown and group photo, we will meet in the churchyard of St Paul's, at the benches by the Statue of the Conversion of St Paul. The nearest access is through the gate (see photo below) that is opposite the massive Christmas tree.

    3.30 PM
We will return to the benches at the Statue of Conversion of St Paul to look at drawings and take final group photographs.

The gate to St Paul's churchyard.

    Afterwards

We could then gather in the cafe/restaurant in the Royal Opera House on the ground floor next to the shop. This is open to the public until at least 8pm on days when they have performances.

There are plenty of other pubs and bars (albeit very busy running up to Christmas) in Covent Garden, if people want to stay back for a drink.

    Options for drawing

    • The Victorian market buildings: the central market and Jubilee Market. There will be a Christmas market/stalls just outside the piazza opposite the entrance to the Royal Opera House.
    Sketch by Lindsay Topping
    • St Pauls Church (also known as the Actors’ Church) with its peaceful churchyard: numerous memorial plaques (including one for Sir Charles Chaplin!) and inside the warm interior is mostly covered in beautifully polished wood.

    • Royal Opera House: the top floor bar area offers some spectacular views of Covent Garden markets below. The Floral Hall, with its magnificent barrelled roof and stunning ironwork, occasionally hold free public performances.

    Sketch by Isabel Carmona
    Sketch by Jacqueline Röhr
    • Street performers and musicians: they’re everywhere! Street performers’ area outside the piazza (where the giant Christmas tree is); there is another performers’ area in the North Hall inside the piazza; there are regular Christmas carol and opera performances and musicians playing downstairs in the South Hall.
    • London Transport Museum: The museum itself charges an entrance fee, but entry to the beautifully vibrant shop and cafe is free.

    Practical information

    Getting there

The nearest Tube stations include Covent Garden (Piccadilly Line; 1min walk), Charing Cross (Bakerloo and Northern Lines; 7 min walk) and Holborn (Central and Piccadilly Lines; 10 min walk).

    COVID-19 visit information

We will remain alert to national guidance about COVID-19 and its variants. Even while restrictions have been lifted, it's sensible to take all necessary precautions to keep ourselves and fellow sketchers safe throughout the event. The risk of infection for outdoor events is low, but basic guidance still applies:
