Summer evening sketching 2018

Join us for some relaxed evening sketching near London’s river Thames. Explore, sketch, socialise, eat and drink, as you prefer. We have planned three evening meet-ups:

·         Wednesday 20 June, 6pm-8pm, meeting at the Golden Hinde near Southwark Cathedral

·         Wednesday 25 July, 6pm-8pm, meeting at Flat Iron Square, Bankside

·         Wednesday 8 August, 6pm-8pm, meeting at Gabriel’s Wharf, on the South Bank

We will draw from 6pm to 8pm, then meet up again to look at the sketches done and take photos, then people have the option to eat, drink and socialise. Each evening is free of charge, no need to book, just turn up with your art kit. More information below:

Meeting point: 6pm next to the Golden Hinde, a full-size replica of the 16^th century galleon of Sir Francis Drake, next to the Old Thameside Inn, and at 8pm at the same place. 

The Golden Hinde is at St Mary Overie Dock, Cathedral Street, SE1. As well as drawing the Golden Hinde, we can draw river views, Southwark Cathedral, the ruins of Winchester Palace, and the small shops and streets around Borough Market. If it is wet, we can draw inside nearby pubs and cafes or under the canopies of Borough Market, and finish up at the Old Thameside Inn.

Meeting point: 6pm at Flat Iron Square, Bankside, off Union Street, and at 8pm at the same place.

Flat Iron Square is a new ‘foodie hub’ in Bankside. It is at the junction of Union Street, O’Meara Street and Southwark Street. Having redeveloped seven old railway arches, it has restaurants, bars, street food trucks and sometimes live music. Draw the people and buildings, including the old railway arches, and the nearby old shops, buildings and bridges in this mixed but historic area. If it is wet, there is plenty of cover and interior spaces at Flat Iron Square.

Meeting point: 6pm at Gabriel’s Wharf, near the central canopy, and at 8pm at the same place.

Gabriel’s Wharf, Upper Ground, is an open area just back from the river between the National Theatre and the OXO Tower building. It has small shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes, which we can draw.  Other options for drawing are river views from the nearby jetties, and the OXO Tower buildings. If wet, we can draw inside the National Theatre or inside pubs and cafes.

Miss Jones' residence

A very busy Borough Market was the venue for a recent London Urban Sketchers outing.   I arrived late so wanted to get started quickly and noticed this lovely little building, the Globe Tavern, dwarfed by the steelwork and railway bridges.  I didn’t know at the time but the flat above the pub was used as one of the locations in the film ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’.

In the afternoon, after sampling some of the delicious food the market has to offer, I chose to draw inside the main market building.  I found the structure is so complicated to draw, with sections added here and there as the market expanded.  It was really enjoyable though and I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in the area.

No one will go hungry at this month's gathering as we are meeting at one of London's most tasty markets - Borough Market - a dream for the foodies amongst us.There is multitude of produce/stalls/architecture/tasty morsels to sketch so your inspiration should rejoice.

Start Meeting 11:30 On Stoney Street See map link here for exact location, just off Southwark St
To get there, nearest tube is London Bridge or see the market's page

Lunch time 1:30 pm at the Market itself under cover opposite Park Street

In the afternoon we suggest:
Continue to draw the market or you can explore the surrounding streets or the riverside between Southwark and London bridges.

The end - meet again at the entrance to the market under the railway bridge at 4pm to share our sketches and then from 4:30pm at the Wheatsheaf

A very pleasant afternoon at an impromptu pop up sketch session courtesy of James Hobbs. This is number 8 Stoney Street; a  takeaway on the ground floor. I got enticed by a few random chimney pots, window frames and brick arches over the first floor windows. The actual shop part is not quite as romantic as the rest of the building suggests. 

I went back during the week for another go. It was supposed to be a simple little drawing with some nice brick work. Again I learn that the simplest ideas are often the hardest ones to get down.

Come and join us if you can from 1.30pm when a group of us will be meeting by the tables outside the Porteña stall in the market. There will lots of warming sustenance around to fight the cold weather.
