What's the deadline?

We're accepting submissions until midnight (GMT) of Sunday 18 September 2022.

Once we've received your images, we will let you know by Tuesday 20 September 2022 if your work is selected.

Who can submit?

We welcome submissions from any sketcher in the UK or abroad who has drawn London on location in a way that meets the criteria of the Urban Sketchers Manifesto.

How do sketchers submit their artwork?

To submit your artwork for the exhibition, scroll down to the big red 'Exhibition submission form' button below. You will need to agree to our Terms and Conditions, which are set out below and included on the submission form.

What are we looking for?

We want to see a variety of sketches and paintings that tell a story of London.

Each person can submit up to four sketches. There is a hanging fee for each artwork selected: 

• £5 for 1 picture
• £9 for 2 pictures
• £12 for 3 pictures 
• £15 for 4 pictures.

What if someone wants to buy my art?

Your art can be either for sale or NFS (Not For Sale) at the exhibition. Urban Sketchers London will process all sales during the exhibition, and will take a 10% commission on the price of each artwork sold (see our Terms and Conditions below). Please take our commission into account when setting your prices.

Here are our terms and conditions

• For each artwork you submit, you must include the medium, size and sale price. If your form is not complete, we will not be able to display it or promote it.

• Use the 'Exhibition submission form' button below to submit your images via our Google form. Alternatively, you can send us your images by email.

• Urban Sketchers London will charge a commission of 10% for each artwork sold. Please take this into account when you price your artwork. Please also note our hanging fees listed below. 

If your artwork is selected, you agree to the following points

• Deliver your work to us on the specified Receiving Day at the Exhibition venue:

        Mile End Art and Community Centre

        The Art Pavillion

        Mile End Park

        Clinton Road, London E3 4QY. 

• Ensure your artwork is ready to display, complete with hanging cord for 2D work. 

• Be sure your artwork is covered by insurance for any eventuality, from the moment you hand it in to the moment you collect it.

• Pay your hanging fee (by cash or card) when you hand it in on Receiving Day. The fees are as follows:

        £5 for one picture

        £9 for 2 pictures

        £12 for 3 pictures

        £15 for 4 pictures.

• Collect unsold work from the exhibition venue on the date and time specified in Exhibition Details.

• If your artwork is sold we will notify you, and at the end of the exhibition we will send you instructions as to how to invoice Urban Sketchers London. There will be a small payment transaction fee for each sale -- we will deduct this fee before we calculate our 10% commission.   

• You agree that Urban Sketchers London may use the images you sent us to promote the event, either in printed literature or on social media.

And this is what Urban Sketchers London will do for you

• Display the selected artworks, curate the exhibition, open and steward the display during exhibition opening times, and process payments for the sale of all artworks

• Respond in a timely manner to artists' queries about sales, and notify exhibitors when their artwork is sold.

Let's draw Chiswick Riverside - Saturday 24 September 2022

In September we draw the Thames riverside around Chiswick Pier

This month's event is a collaboration between the Thames Festival Trust and Urban Sketchers London, hosted by the Chiswick Pier Trust. We are part of the Totally Thames Festival 2022, which brings a bonus to each organisation. 

The day is free of charge. You can book your free ticket as part of the Totally Thames Festival, or just turn up.

We have as our base Pier House, nestled on the towpath at Chiswick Pier. The Chiswick Pier Trust is generously providing a space with loos and access to a kettle, and a weatherproof space for each of our three throwdowns. Pier House itself has resources we can use, including some stools for sketching.

Pier House - Our meeting point

There are varied opportunities for sketching. Chiswick Pier is the location of several interesting houseboats. The view up and down the river is broad and breathtaking. A five minute walk takes you to Dukes Meadows, a bio-diverse mix of riverside towpath, woodland and open meadow. At its heart is The Dukes Meadows Bandstand, which provides both an interesting subject and shelter if needed. The whole area has terracing with convenient seating.

11 AM

Meet at the Pier House, Corney Reach Way, Chiswick, London W4 2UG.

This is situated on the towpath next to Chiswick Pier. Pier House is about 15 minutes' walk from Barnes Bridge and from Chiswick Stations. A large room will be available to us, with light refreshments and loos. You will spot the RNLI lifeboat station above the building; our entrance is on the ground floor. We will meet outside if the weather is fine.

1 PM

Meet again inside Pier House for a spacious and weatherproof throwdown venue.

3.30 PM

Meet at the same place for the final throwdown.

Afterwards

For those who would like to stay on for a drink and chat (and to sketch!) the Barnes Riverside offers several pubs, including The White Hart, just over the railway bridge by Barnes Bridge Station.

Pre-visit activities

One of the aims of the collaboration with the Thames Festival Trust is to engage people with the riverside, and sketching is a wonderful way to do this. Together we aim to provide people with information about urban sketching and how to start. To this end, on Tuesday 6th September at 7pm, the Festival is featuring our very own Mike Whalley in a live Zoom session, explaining all about urban sketching and what we do.

Options for drawing

The riverside at Chiswick Pier

The location at Chiswick Pier provides a wealth of variety. The pier itself hosts colourful houseboats and from here you can see panoramic views of the river towards Hammersmith in one direction and Mortlake in the other.

Dukes Meadows

A five minute walk takes you to Dukes Meadows, a mix of riverside towpath, woodland and open meadow. The Dukes Meadows Trust led the regeneration of the meadows to create a beautiful riverside park. Starting in 2000 the trust has raised over £1 million to create fabulous play areas, and has planted hedgerows, wildflower meadows and an orchard to increase the biodiversity of the park. Hailed as a model of sustainability, the Trust has established successful social enterprises that generate revenue to maintain the improvements made. Volunteers run the Trust and help maintain the park. At its heart is the Dukes Meadow Bandstand, which provides both an interesting subject and shelter if needed. The whole area has terracing with convenient seating overlooking the riverside.

Barnes Bridge

Barnes Bridge is a 15 minute walk away on the other side of Dukes Meadows. Architecturally splendid, it also boasts some great graffiti and a fabulous view. There are some distinctive houses across the river, and a stroll across the bridge reveals another stunning perspective.

Practical information

By public transport

Chiswick and Barnes Bridge Railway stations are each about a 15 minute walk from Pier House. The stations are on the Hounslow/Weybridge to Waterloo line. For departure and arrival times, please visit Southwest Trains. 

The E3 and 190 buses stop close by on the A316. For their routes, locations of bus stops and real-time bus locations, please visit the E3 and 190 bus timetables on the Transport for London website.

By car

Chiswick Pier and The Pier House are in Corney Reach Way, off the roundabout at the end of Corney Road and Edensor Road, Chiswick. The Pier House entrance faces onto the riverside piazza. The site of what used to be Pissarro’s restaurant is immediately next door upstream along the riverside walkway.

There is little parking at Pier House, but there are parking bays at Dukes Meadows on Riverside Drive, and there are parking bays opposite the riverfront on The Promenade.

Facilities on site

There will be light refreshments (a kettle and some biscuits) available at Pier House itself. On the riverside towards Dukes Meadows there is a little cafe, and the pubs and cafes of Barnes are over the railway bridge.

The area is flat and has good paths throughout. Barnes Bridge is only accessible via steps, though a new walkway around the base of the bridge on the Chiswick side will extend the accessible path.

Toilets are available at Pier House.

COVID-19 visit information

We will remain alert to national guidance about COVID-19 and its variants. Even while restrictions have been lifted, it's sensible to take all necessary precautions to keep ourselves and fellow sketchers safe throughout the event. The risk of infection for outdoor events is low, but basic guidance still applies:

· Please do not attend if you feel unwell

· Wear a face covering when you're close to others

· Give people space, and 

· Practice good hand hygiene.

In August we draw Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens 

The buzz of our 10-Year Anniversary Celebration Weekend last month is settling, but the sketching continues! Come and join us in Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens in August.  

Hyde Park is the largest of the four Royal Parks. Together with Kensington Gardens, it covers 625 acres, set right in the heart of London. 

There is no cost to join us on the day. Just turn up with your drawing kit.

Key times and meeting points

11 am

We will meet just outside the gates of the Serpentine North Gallery (see image below). In case of rain, there is some shelter inside by the cafe on the left.

1 pm

Our first 'throwdown' and group photo will be outside the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, by the glass-fronted area facing the lake (see image below).

3.30 pm

Our final throwdown will take place at the same location by the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen. 

Afterwards
We can go to the Rose & Crown pub (see location map) for a drink afterwards. With cafes and bars around Hyde Park, there are many other options for anyone who wants to explore further.

Serpentine Galleries 

Both the North and South Galleries are open and free to visit. For more information, see What's On. 

Memorials, fountains and statues

Nineteen fountains, memorials and statues are spread out across the park, including the Diana Memorial Fountain, the Holocaust Memorial, the Hyde Park Bandstand, and the Hudson Memorial Bird Sanctuary.

Speakers’ Corner

Speakers' Corner is located on the north-east edge of Hyde Park, nearest Marble Arch and Oxford Street. Historic figures such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and George Orwell were known to often use the area to demonstrate free speech. This may be an ideal spot for sketching people -- or you might like to exercise free speech yourself, as anyone can turn up unannounced to speak on any subject (as long as the police consider their speeches lawful).

The LookOut 

The LookOut Hyde Park is a unique eco-friendly building nestled within an acre of enclosed grounds in the park. 

Italian Gardens
A picturesque park near Lancaster Gate, with multiple carved historic pools, fountains, sculptures and walking paths.  

Kensington Gardens
On the western side of Hyde Park is Kensington Gardens. Options for sketching include the Peter Pan statue, The Albert Memorial and spectacular views of Kensington Palace across the Round Pond. 

Cafes and bars

Hyde Park has a variety of cafes, restaurants and refreshment kiosks, including Serpentine Bar & Kitchen, Serpentine Lido Café, and the Lodge Café.

Practical information

The Tube station nearest to our meeting point is Lancaster Gate (Central Line).  Marble Arch (Central Line) and Hyde Park Corner (Piccadilly Line) are on the Northern and Eastern side of the park, respectively.

Hyde Park public toilets are located at the LookOut and the Lido (see map for locations). There are also toilets in the Serpentine Galleries and the Serpentine Bar & Kitchen.

We've been working hard for months, and at last the 10 Year Anniversary Celebration Weekend is nearly here. We have a shiny new logo and a stunning new book, our sponsors are second to none, and we've planned a weekend of non-stop sketching, all for you.

The weekend starts with a free warm-up sketchwalk on Friday afternoon, followed by our official launch Friday evening. The launch is for ticket holders only and is sold out, but the event will be live-streamed and recorded on Instagram at @urbansketcherslondon. Join us virtually at 18.00 on Friday 22 July 2022 for our London by Urban Sketchers book launch, and talks by travel and current affairs illustrator George Butler, and Mario Linhares, founder of Urban Sketchers Portugal.

Our celebrations continue Saturday and Sunday from morning to night, with eleven free sketchwalks, twelve workshops, Night Sketching sessions and Drink & Draw. We'll wrap up the weekend on Sunday afternoon with a grand finale sketchwalk and group photo at St Paul's Cathedral.
